Welcome to Whakatane Freenet, New Zealand_s first free wireless internet.

Freenet Whakatane

The Whakatane Freenet hotspot zone covers The Strand and the area around the Whakatane Information Centre (to discover the coverage area, click onto _Are you in the zone?) All you need to do is turn on your laptop with a wireless card or built-in wireless, or any other 802.11 wireless device and you will see Whakatane_Freenet on the list of available networks. Just connect to it and you are away!

If you just want to surf the net, search for a place to stay or things to do, check your email and send a pic, you can do it all for free. From here you can go where you like (almost). There are some restrictions, but they are there to stop those that would try and spoil it for others. These restrictions are:

  • The content of the sites you browse to are filtered and you will not be allowed to access objectionable or sexually explicit sites.
  • You will only be allowed to connect for a maximum of 2 hours in any 24 hour period.
You can spread this time throughout the day by logging off via the 'popup' screen.
You must allow 'popups' in your browser and don't close it, you need it to log off.
  • You will only be allowed to download/upload 8 MBs of data per 24 hours. This should be plenty for your email and a bit of web browsing.
  • You will not be able to access filesharing programs but we have left ports open to allow VPN or RDP connections if you need to connect to your home or office network.
  • Although anonymous use is permitted your laptop or device can be tracked and identified and we will block that device if you attempt to abuse this service.

We hope you find this service useful. If you are looking for things to do, a place to stay or want to find out more about what Whakatane can offer just click here.
